Everybody practises art, theatre or literature but mostly without huge success. Everybody sticks together at the country market like small fries in the barrel. Czechow puts his characters on the ramshackle roundabout; there is no sense; if somebody loves for sure is not loved, and if somebody is loved then that person doesn't want to return the affection. The fight of the generation, rebellion in the name of new form, sentimental ups, everything comes only from the stagnation.

It is not a climate that dominate in Czechow's drama. Seagull is a scavenger. The roundabout grates and sways but it still turns.
