European Capital of Culture 2016
In 2016 one city from Spain and one from Poland will concurrently hold the title of the European Capital of Culture. These cities will present their cultural lives and events on a broader, European forum.
The city from Poland will be selected in a contest. The deadline for submitting applications was in July 2007. Apart from Poznań, the Polish applicants are Gdańsk, Lublin, Łódź, Szczecin and Toruń. The city who wins the contest will hold the title for a year and will have access to EU financial support for their cultural projects and the renovation of their historical monuments.

With a history of over 1000 years Poznań and its surrounding areas are a real paradise for tourists. Apart form offering numerous historic monuments, Poznań today is an important centre of industry, commerce, culture and sports as well as university education and science. It is also one of the leading cities in Poland in terms of economy.
Culture
Cultural Poznań offers a great variety of theatres, a philharmonic hall, choirs and orchestras as well as many museums, galleries and exhibition halls. The city is the venue of several major festivals and music contests including the Malta International Theatre Festival, the Maski Theatre Festival, the Modern Dance Biennial, the International Sculpture Triennial and the Henryk Wieniawski International Violin and Violin Makers' Competition.

Poznań and the whole Wielkopolska Region are well known throughout Poland for their excellent business sense, dedication to work and financial prudence. Tourism

Of European significance is also the modern Lake Malta Regatta Course surrounded by attractive recreation sites, for example an all-year-round skiing slope and a toboggan course. Apart from 10 stadiums and sports pitches, 14 swimming pools and a hippodrome, Poznań also has a speedway course, a motorcar racetrack, archery lanes and numerous tennis courts as well as a golf course and a state-of-the art sports and recreation hall.

Year of Climate and Environment
At the initiative of the Mayor of the City of Poznań 2008 has been announced the Year of Climate and Environment. This decision is related to the UN Conference on Climate Changes which will be held in Poznań between 1 and 12 December 2008. The celebrations of the Year of Climate and Environment will include a series of events aimed at making the residents of the region more aware of climate-related and environmental issues. Among these events is the concert of Nelly Furtado on 11 July at Lake Malta.
